How to Verify a College or University Is Genuine

Every few years, cases surface of students discovering, sometimes after completing a full degree, that their college or university was never properly recognized. Verifying approval status takes minutes and can save years. What a genuine institution should have: - UGC recognition (for universities). Check the University Grants Commission's list of recognized universities at ugc.gov.in. A university not on this list cannot legally award valid degrees in India. - AICTE approval (for technical/engineering/management colleges). Technical institutions must be approved by the All India Council for Technical Education, verify at aicte-india.org. - A real, physical campus. Ask for a campus visit or a live video walkthrough. Be cautious of institutions that only operate out of a small office or claim to be "under construction" for multiple years. - Affiliation details that check out. If a college claims affiliation with a public university, verify that claim directly on the university's own website, not just on the college's marketing material. - No guarantee of placement or grades. Be skeptical of any institution promising guaranteed job placement, guaranteed passing grades, or degrees completed in unusually short timeframes. - Government fee-approval status, where applicable. In many states, professional courses (engineering, medical, management) have fees regulated by a state fee committee, an institution charging well outside this range is worth investigating further. When in doubt, cross-check the institution's name against UGC's list of fake universities, published and updated periodically on ugc.gov.in.
